My baby, my poor, poor baby...

Was out on a shoot last night and a rouge wave splashed my camera and I. While I dried off ok, it seems the camera didn't. There was a bit of fog on the inside of the Coolpix 5000 lens. I yanked the battery and let it sit in a warm room to dry overnight.. While the fog is gone out of the lens, I'm thinking it's just a matter of time before things start to go kaput. The telephoto lens is already a little sluggish. I've spent most of the day on the phone to my insurance company while putting the images from last night thru PS CS. Here's some questions I have, thanks to this experience:

1. Any drying suggestions?

2. How do you insure you gear for, for how much and thru who? I had a rider on my old house insurance for my gear for $5000. Apparently, and totally unbeknown to me, when I moved the rider didn't come with me. The agent said that regular house insurance won't cover water damage unless it was from a burst pipe, collapsed roof, etc. When asked about the old rider she said it might not have been covered then. She did mention inland marine coverage policy but it was pricey. Anyone have this? I only work near water 3 to 4 months a year so I know if I was to get it, it would be a temp thing.

3. What are people working with out there digital-wise? I might be looking for a new camera real soon and would like some hands-on user info; not a glossed over review by the company. I want to stay at 5 MP and even go up. My budget (ha HA) is going to keep me around 1 grand. I've used Nikon but want the most bang-buck ratio.

Mark,

Sorry to hear about your accident. I've had a similar experience.

Around 2 years ago, I'd brought my Canon G3 to Hawaii on vacation. As soon as we'd landed, I brought my camera out to the beach for some sunset shots. While clicking away, a sea breeze (mist) blew in and that was it. My camera didn't work after that. I brought it to Canon and they told me the camera was fried. He said it might be something to do with the mist and sea salt ??? Anyways, I was lucky, they replaced the internals under warranty.

That was my personal experience. 2 month's ago, my friend was fishing with the family. He left his camera bag in the stroller. His wife picked up the baby and he watch in horror to see the stroller along with his camera bag rolled right into the lake. All his equipment was done. The bright side of this story was that his cameras were both film cameras and he's been debating about going to digital. He'd claim the lost under his house insurance and got back $4k for original purchase value. Now he's shopping for a new Canon 20D :p

Hope you're as lucky as my friend's situation. Otherwise, it's time to at bigger, faster, better camera...

Good luck...

It's never fun when your favorite camera ceases to operate.

I've just converted from film to digital because I didn't want to replace my K-mount lenses. That being said, I am very impressed with the Pentax *ist D that I bought. It's user friendly (so far) and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what it's capable of.

As far as your photography goes... do you have a business certificate? (sole proprietership thingy?)

Just get separate business insurance...

The more coverage you get, the more the cost..

In addition to my busines liability insurance, I added off-site coverage (out of my shop) that covered up to 50,000 in cash or equipment of my own and I don't think it cost me that much more to add on. (I am uninsured now since I closed my shop a few years ago, so I forget the exact costs...)

just call an insurance agent and ask... a local call is free ;)
