Hey, My name is Rachael, I'm a college student in central NY and I have always loved the thought of modeling. But, looking through what you have to have ... 5'9 and 34-24-34...I'm not sure there is alot of room for me. I am 5'4 and 100 to about 105 lbs. 32 B...and altogether a very very slim frame. High fashion seems to be strictly out of the question...but is there anywhere else looking for models with this type of build? If anyone could offer any info...that would be amazing. :). Thanks sooo much!!!
Rachael :)

In your case I would recommend doing some TFP's with some local photographers... If ya have a good body then you could try to get into more swimsuit/lingerie/glamour type of work... Ever heard of http://www.onemodelplace.com ? I'm not gonna write that much cause I don't want anything I say getting twisted, but feel free to e-mail me if ya have any questions.. I'm sure there are many other models/photograhers on this board who can give you some good sound advice as well :)

I've found that modeling, in terms of what makes a good model, isn't so much about build but more about personality and desire. There will always be those that tell you that you can't do this and you can't do that. The trick is to find what fits you best and work in those areas. I've worked with a range of great models - 6' tall, 120 lbs, with a thin build all the way to 4'10, 130 lbs with DD's. Each of them share common denominators. They wanted to do it, had fun while doing it, and put an effort into achieving their goals.

Of late I've seen a lot of "newbie" models come onto the scene with no experience expecting high modeling fees out of the gate and sitting on their duffs waiting for photographers to bust down their door. I especially get a kick out of the ones that post that they have modeling experience and show webcam or phone camera images as proof. Some place severe restrictions such as not willing to travel, limited use of the final images and limited open dates to shoot on, etc. Then they wonder why the phone doesn't ring.

There are several outstanding models on this site alone that have made a niche for themselves. They have the drive and have worked their butts off to get where they are. They would be a great resource for someone like you whose just starting out. Use them.

Do the research. There are a ton of sites out there, besides this one, that promote modeling and photography like onemodelplace.com and modelmayhem.com. See what others are doing in your area. See what kind of things they are offering to do and how much work they are getting. Hook up with a few different photographers/models and get their input. Be honest about yourself, your goals and how much effort you are willing to put into it.

Above all else make sure you're having fun while doing it. After all, if it isn't fun, then why are you doing it?

Hope this is a good start. Keep in touch and let us know how it's going.

Mark

Rachael,
Depending on what kind of modeling you want to do, there is a place for virtually everyone, in my experience. I'm a NYC photographer who has recently relocated to Central NY. Check out my website at http://www.michaelberkowitz.com and look at my work and if you're interested, write me and send a picture. Good luck

.......words of advice I can offer you is find a great photographer invest a few coins in them and see where the road takes you.........obviously because of your height you can pretty much forget fashion/editorial.......unless you have an incredible look or luck like Kate Moss/Latetia Caesta did.......try commercial print and find a good local agent/agency that like you and can promote your look.....but trust me GWC's will get you no where fast in this business........so stay far away from them........unless you just ant to try and make a few quick bucks doing glamour/nudes type of work?

Best,

Israel

P.S. Numero uno........if your hungry/talented and serious Rachael you have a chance in this zany business.....otherwise forget it.
