Larisa,
Don't get hung up with the sync cord issue as it is a minor fix as information on the trigger voltage can be obtained from the strobe maker or from Canon and is not an expensive fix.
The biggest issue is to make sure, since you are on a limited budget, that you invest wisely and purchase lights that fit your needs.
Too often we buy equipment that we do not fully research and find that it does not work in the fashion that we wanted it to work. We then find that we either have to purchase additional equipment, sell what we bought because it was not the right product or let the equipment gather dust in the corner.

What Ray said! Exactly! Be sure what you are buying, make sure what your needs are.. ask others... fit the budget... I did a lot of research on my studio lights (with help from Ray) and finally decided on the AlienBee lights made by Paul Bluff's company. They fit my budget, had the power that I needed, the portability I wanted and after three years of using them I can say they have done me well!

Just be honest to yourself, and don't "sell" yourself on something you don't need (which I do all the time!), but also don't sell yourself short because of dollars. You can do A LOT with just one light and reflectors!
