I've decided to finally make my own website, but I don't know the first thing about it. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to get one? I don't want something that is going to cost me an arm and a leg, but I want something nice.

Kelly you are leaving a lot of questions in our minds...

What are you really asking??? Let me ask some questions to help along...

1. Are you going to design the website, and install on a server?
2. Or did you want someone to make the website for you and you just supply the text and images?
3. "Where to go to get one?" Get what? A hosting service? A webdesigner? A HTML software package?

Once you answer these basic questions, you are on your way.

Some thoughts from me... I think for someone not really knowing what to do to start a website a place like OMP is very good. Inexpensive ($40 a year) and easy to upload images to. If you really want your own look and you know how to design a site (not just making it pretty, but HTML code) then there are lots of options for hosting services. The one I use is http://www.doteasy.com and my son uses http://www.dreamhost.com But these are just two of many choices. There are also many services around that offer design services especially for models. I know there are several models that frequent this forum that have their own sites, but are designer by others.

Hope this gets you a start... don't hesitate to email me directly with questions... best of luck!

Max,
Well since I really don't know anything about making a website, then I really am not sure how to answer your questions. As far as OMP, I already have two of those sites and that is not what I am looking for. I want my own website with my name as the domain. At the same time, I don't know anything about HTML to make my own website and I don't want someone else to do it completely for me because when I have a new image or I want to change something, I don't want to have to wait and get ahold of that person to do it for me. So I'm not really sure.

Since you want to do this on your own, plan on it taking a couple of months... first go to a local community college and take a web course so you can learn HTML... then take a photoshop course so you can learn how to manage and manipulate photographic images... then find a hosting site that you can put your website on and learn how to FTP your images and HTML onto the website. It all sounds complicated, but it's really pretty easy... hey I can do it, anyone can! LOL!

OR...

Deal with waiting for a few days for images to go up, and hire someone to manage your site for you... or get them to build you the basic site and with learning the above you can update your images...

OR...

Try this website, you may get what you want with some ease... iModel.com I know a few models on there and the quality of the site is very high, you will probably recognize some also...

Good Luck! Let us know when you have your site!

hi kelly!!! that's cool that you're thinking of having your own website... i love having one.
i'd try max's suggestion about imodel... that's what i use and it's super easy... most of the work is done for you but you still get a lot of control with the design/look of it... and you get to change anything you want really easily... plus you can use your own name as the domain like you said you wanted. you do have to pay but it's pretty cheap... only like $10 a month.
you can check out mine at http://www.michele-stanek.com
and i think tiana's is http://www.tianahunter.com
hope this helps :)

Thanks Max and Michele. I will probably go with iModel. That sounds best for my options right now. As for going to college and taking classes, that is impossible with my schedule. Being in the military and working 6am-5pm then coming home and having enough time for myself and my husband that about wears me out so the college thing is out for awhile, but I will definatly check out iModel. Thanks

Kelly understanding your situation a little, I kind of figured that... I didn't want to discourage you... but also realized that there is a lot involved... I looked deeper into the iModel site and I agree with Michele... it looks like a great answer to your situation AND many others. I wouldn't discount OMP all together because there are some great features there that are also good such as the travel notices. With being in the military you are bound to be traveling places and having some time to do a little modeling... take advantage of it!

Best of luck!

I'm definatly going to do the iModel thing. I'm going to start it sometime this week whenever I have time. I do have two sites on OMP. One for NY and also one for NC. It is nice and I do see a lot of travel and new photographer notifications which really help out (especially with the lack of photographers in my area). My main idea is that I want a site with my name as the domain and one that I for the most part design. It's just easier to give out a website address that you have rather than one for OMP. I want to start putting all of this together soon. After my husband and I have our baby I'm going to get myself right back into shape and start looking for an agency down here since my contract with Nexus is up. (Not that living in NC and having a contract in NY was doing me any good). But I am interested in getting right back into things and I figure if I set it all up now the easier it will be for me then!
